WASHINGTON, D.C. (August 1, 2024) – The McCain Institute at Arizona State University is profoundly relieved by the prisoner exchange involving the United States, Germany, Russia, Turkey, and others, while remaining gravely concerned about the Kremlin’s ongoing human rights violations. The following statement was issued by McCain Institute Executive Director Dr. Evelyn Farkas:
“The release of Vladimir Kara-Murza, Evan Gershkovich, Paul Whelan, Alsu Kurmasheva, and other courageous individuals unjustly held in Russia by Putin’s repressive regime is a significant victory for freedom and human dignity.
“Vladimir Kara-Murza, who honored Senator John McCain as a pallbearer, embodies the unwavering spirit of democracy. Despite facing multiple assassination attempts orchestrated by the Kremlin, his steadfast commitment to promoting human rights in Russia continues to inspire hope for a just future.
“Evan Gershkovich, a dedicated journalist, fell victim to Russia’s ruthless suppression of free press, as did American-Russian journalist Alsu Kurmasheva. Evan’s wrongful detention on fabricated espionage charges, and Alsu’s charges of ‘spreading false information about the Russian army’ were blatant attacks on the pillars of journalism and freedom of information. We unequivocally condemn Russia’s criminalization of legitimate reporting and its flagrant violation of international norms.
“Paul Whelan, wrongfully detained for five years is finally also free, as well as several Russian dissident colleagues of Kara-Murza’s, like Ilya Yashin.
“While we applaud these releases, we must remember the countless political prisoners still suffering in Russia’s modern-day gulags. These brave souls, whose only transgression is envisioning a Russia free from tyranny, deserve our unwavering support and advocacy.
“The McCain Institute stands resolute in solidarity with these prisoners and their families. We denounce Russia’s relentless assault on civil society, independent media, and political opposition in the strongest possible terms. The Kremlin’s actions not only oppress Russian citizens but pose a dire threat to global democracy and human rights.
“We reaffirm our unshakeable commitment to continue our critical work until every political hostage walks free and the Russian people can determine their own destiny.
“In the spirit of Senator McCain’s enduring legacy, we declare: We stand with you, we fight for you, and we will never abandon you in your noble struggle against tyranny.
“We want to particularly thank the Free Russia Foundation, the Foley Foundation, and the countless other organizations and families who tirelessly fought for the release of Vladimir, Evan, Paul, Alsu, and the other detainees who should never have found themselves in a Russian prison in the first place.”
About the McCain Institute’s Efforts to Free Kara-Murza
Following Vladamir Kara-Murza’s detainment in Moscow on April 19, 2022, the McCain Institute took action and has remained a leading organization working to secure his release, including holding several events on Capitol Hill and petitioning the White House and United Nations. At the 2022 Sedona Forum, the McCain Institute awarded Kara-Murza the Courage and Leadership Award, which was accepted by Yevgeniya Kara-Murza with a powerful speech on her husband’s behalf.
