Release the Hostages: McCain Institute Executive Director Remarks on Anniversary of October 7 Hamas Terror Attack

WASHINGTON, D.C. (October 7, 2024) McCain Institute Executive Director Dr. Evelyn Farkas today issued the following statement on the first anniversary of the October 7 attack in Israel when Hamas terrorists, backed by Iran, killed 1,200 people and kidnapped more than 250 others, including babies, the elderly, and entire families.

“One year ago, Hamas, backed by Iran, launched the deadliest attack on Jewish people since the Holocaust. The October 7 attack in southern Israel and the Nova music festival, the taking of hostages, and the subsequent attacks by Hezbollah and Iran in recent months are horrific and unthinkable acts of aggression. This summer I visited locations in Israel where these barbaric acts occurred, and no person should ever have to endure the events of that horrible day.

“The human toll of the conflict and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza must also be addressed. NGOs are being refused access, and severe hunger and disease persist. Food, fuel, medical supplies, and other humanitarian aid must be allowed into Gaza.

“The return of all remaining hostages and a ceasefire is paramount to a lasting peace in the region.

“A two-state solution is critical to achieving peace, but it involves all U.S. allies in the Middle East and Europe who are advocating for a Palestinian state to assist in diplomatic discussions and to put pressure on Hamas and Iran to release the hostages and release their grip on the region. It is time to end the Iranian-led cycle of terror.”
