WASHINGTON, D.C. – To mark Senator John McCain’s 87th birthday, and just following the fifth anniversary of his passing on August 25, McCain Institute Executive Director Dr. Evelyn Farkas released the following statement:
“Today, on what would have been Senator John McCain’s 87th birthday, we at the McCain Institute at Arizona State University are as proud as ever to carry on his legacy of fighting for human rights and democracy and confronting the world’s most pressing challenges at home and abroad.
“In the context of Russia’s murderous, criminal war on Ukraine, China’s aggressive nationalism and saber-rattling towards Taiwan, and active collaboration among autocrats to threaten human rights and democracy around the world and in America, voices like Sen. McCain’s are sorely missed. At the McCain Institute, we are guided by his belief in ‘Service Over Self,’ and the idea that protecting individual human rights and empowering individuals are at the core of why we defend democracy and bolster our national security.
“A decade after the McCain Institute’s inception, we continue to use our unique convening ability and our expert-driven programs to produce policy outcomes that advance democracy, human rights, and character-driven leadership.
“And five years after his passing, Sen. McCain’s legacy of selfless service is more important than ever. Please learn more about the McCain Institute’s work and join our network of changemakers today.”
