Director of Southeast Asia Terrorism and Senior Southeast Asia Political Analyst, Office of National Intelligence
Pippa Hendon began her career in the Defence Intelligence Organisation (DIO) as a Southeast Asia political-military analyst. While at DIO, she spent time on South Asia and governance desks and as the executive officer to DIO’s Op OKRA mission manager and crisis team. Pippa joined the Office of National Intelligence (ONI) in 2015 as an open source analyst in the Open Source Centre’s first terrorism team where she focused on Southeast Asian Islamist terrorism. In 2016 she joined ONI’s all-source analytical cohort as a Southeast Asia terrorism analyst. Pippa is currently a Southeast Asia political analyst and acting director of ONI’s Southeast Asia terrorism effort. Pippa holds a joint first class honours degree in Arts (communication studies) and Indonesian studies from the University of Western Australia and is an Indonesian linguist. Her honours dissertation — which pre-dated ISIL — delved into Indonesian extremists’ use of social media as a propaganda medium and its inability to provide a healthy public sphere for reasoned debate.
