WASHINGTON, D.C. – Dr. Evelyn Farkas, executive director of the McCain Institute at Arizona State University (ASU), today released the following statement after the U.S. Senate voted to support Finland and Sweden joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO):
“The U.S. Senate’s overwhelming approval of Finland and Sweden’s ascension to NATO takes us one step closer to a historic win for democracy and is a serious blow to Vladimir Putin’s imperial ambitions. This process, which will end with millions in Europe safer than before would not have been possible without Putin’s short-sighted and reckless behavior. The best way to prevent Russian misbehavior continues to be having a credible, strong military and a strong NATO alliance.”
